Practical Gear & Supply Solutions

Emergency preparedness begins with a plan. Included in that plan will be Critical Essentials, Important Documents, and Personal Needs.
The following are ideas for essential tools and gear to consider to make your life easier, both before and after a crisis.
Most I own myself. For your consideration, I research and compare manufacturer specifications, capacities, warranties, current customer feedback, and suitability for your particular needs.
Each of the following suggestions includes a link for a more in-depth look at each tool type.
And at the very least, be prepared with a 72-hour Emergency Preparedness Kit. That’s a good place to start.
Air Purifier for Smoke
If you live in a fire-prone area, an efficient and affordable true HEPA air purifier should be an emergency tool in your ‘back pocket’.
You should want one that services a reasonable amount of space and has a carbon filter and a washable pre-filter to help keep expenses down.
I recommend the WINIX 5510 Air Purifier for those reasons above.

What it can do:

And there’s more:
The unit automatically activates its quiet, energy-efficient Sleep Mode when the room is darkened and returns to Auto Mode in the presence of light
Flood Barrier
Flood Barriers for Doors based on fit, expected water depth, seal quality, and the home’s overall flood riskโnot simply price or barrier height.
When I first researched flood barriers, my first reaction was: YIKES!
Some can be rather pricey. But a lot cheaper than losing your stuff (that includes walls and floors) and memories to floodwaters. And so much easier than sandbags.
If you live in a flood-prone area, check out the hows, whys, and the best flood barriers for doors here.
What works for me is Quick Dam:

Easy to store, easy to use, and easy to pay for, this solution works for me because I’m not in a high-risk flood zone.
But it can happen.
About this solution (from Amazon):
- Water Activated Flood Barriers, Rated #1 in Flood Control
- Grows to 3.5 in high in minutes, just get them wet
- Long, flexible design creates all sorts of shapes
- Use to control, contain & divert flood water
- Ready to use, no sand or labor needed (I like that part)
I suggest considering where you are, your risk, your need for something quick and easy, and your budget.
Portable Power Station
Not everyone has the room and/or desire to own one of those heavy gas-powered generators to get through a power outage. But if you don’t have something, you may watch those expensive groceries go bad.
If you can see that happening in the dark.
Enter the portable power station.

The EcoFlow works for me. I got my refrigerator manual and checked the specs. This unit provides 1800 AC with a 3600W Surge. So I’m good. Your specs might be different, so make sure to check them.
I’ll also be able to connect a light or two and run a fan.
Also, I like the solar panel upgrade. If the power loss is long, you will not be able to plug the power station in to charge the battery. Thanks to the sun, you’ll be covered.
Do your homework and find a portable power station that meets your basic needs when the power is out.
Fireproof Document Box
There is no excuse for not having a safe place to store all those important documents in your life, properly protected from things that may turn them into useless trash.
Fire and water could turn your life upside down, and not having legal proof of anything will delay your righting of the ship.
It does not need to be large and/or fancy. It just needs to be. My choice for my needs is the DocSafe Fireproof File Organizer with Lock.

Easy to load up and organize all those important papers and some devices. Fireproof, waterproof, and easy to pick up and bug out with it.

| WaterBrick Stackable 3.5-Gallon Water & Food Storage Container | Build a neat, stackable water wall that saves space and looks smart. | Big round barrels donโt fit. Bottled water cases flop around.
